Aircraft interiors have long been a canvas for cultural expression, blending functional design with rich heritage. Over the years, airlines have used their cabin interiors to reflect not only comfort and efficiency but also the essence of their brand and cultural identity. Tangerine, an international design agency with a global footprint, is playing a pivotal role in this tradition by preserving and celebrating China Southern Airlines’ rich cultural heritage. Through its work on the airline’s new aircraft cabins, Tangerine is ensuring that China Southern’s legacy is embedded in every aspect of its flying experience, while also creating interiors that cater to the evolving needs of today’s global travelers.

Tangerine’s mission is clear: to design a cabin interior that feels familiar and comfortable to passengers around the world, while simultaneously highlighting China Southern Airlines’ core values. The design process focuses on striking a balance between global appeal and local pride, integrating elements that celebrate China’s cultural richness in a modern and universally appealing way.
Embarking on a new era for China Southern Airlines
As part of its fleet modernization strategy, China Southern Airlines is introducing a dual flagship model featuring the A350-900 and A321NX aircraft. These new-generation aircraft are being designed with superior comfort and design features, elevating the passenger experience to unprecedented heights. Tangerine’s role in shaping the interiors of these aircraft is integral to the airline’s vision of creating an enhanced travel experience that blends innovation with tradition.

With 10 A350-900 aircraft and 20 A321NX aircraft set to join the fleet, Tangerine is designing the interiors that will showcase China Southern Airlines’ commitment to excellence. The A350-900 cabins will offer passengers a luxurious experience with four private cabins, 24 individual business class seats, and 307 economy class seats, while the A321NX will have 12 business class seats and 171 economy class seats.
A design inspired by tradition and modernity
The new cabin designs will evoke an oriental theme, aligning with the airline’s core brand values of ‘affinity’ and ‘refinement’. According to Weiwei He, Director at Tangerine, “Our design reflects China Southern’s cultural identity while embracing a modern, global approach to air travel. We want passengers to feel both a sense of familiarity and sophistication when they step on board.”

To enhance the overall flying experience, Tangerine has also focused on the in-flight entertainment (IFE) system. The graphical user interface (GUI) has been customized to match the aesthetic of the new cabins, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable user experience. This personalized touch not only aligns with the airline’s branding but also provides a rich, immersive journey for passengers, deepening their connection with the airline’s legacy and values.
Incorporating Chinese cultural elements
Tangerine’s design philosophy takes a modern and creative approach to incorporating Chinese cultural elements into the cabin. The team has explored various artistic visions that honor China’s heritage while adapting them for the modern traveler. By combining traditional Chinese design motifs with state-of-the-art materials and finishes, the result is a cabin that feels both rooted in culture and forward-thinking in its functionality.
In today’s competitive airline industry, the ability to blend cultural significance with cutting-edge design is key to creating an exceptional passenger experience. As the global demand for air travel continues to rise, airlines like China Southern are investing in innovative designs that will not only serve their growing customer base but also elevate their brand in a competitive market.

Tangerine’s work with China Southern Airlines represents the next chapter in the evolution of airline interiors. By integrating Chinese design elements with modern aviation technologies, the airline is not just offering a new way to fly but an experience that celebrates its cultural identity on a global scale.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the airline interior design industry, where cultural heritage, modern design, and passenger comfort come together to create an immersive and memorable journey.
