Embraer has partnered with the São Carlos School of Engineering at the University of São Paulo (USP) to launch the Passenger Experience Challenge, a new initiative aimed at developing next-generation aircraft cabin solutions through student-led innovation.
The programme invites students from engineering, design, ergonomics and sustainability disciplines to create practical concepts that improve the passenger experience while addressing real-world cabin design challenges.
For its inaugural edition, the competition focuses on one of the industry’s most persistent cabin issues optimising carry-on baggage capacity in commercial aircraft. Participants will develop concepts designed to make more efficient use of cabin space without compromising passenger comfort or operational practicality.

The challenge combines academic research with industry collaboration through a structured programme that includes concept development, prototype creation, mentorship from Embraer specialists and final evaluations by experts from both academia and the aviation industry.
By encouraging multidisciplinary collaboration, Embraer aims to explore fresh approaches to aircraft interior design while giving students the opportunity to work on challenges that mirror those faced by commercial aircraft manufacturers.
The initiative also highlights the growing role of human-centred design, ergonomics and sustainability in shaping future aircraft cabins, as manufacturers increasingly seek innovative solutions that enhance both passenger comfort and cabin efficiency.
