Textron Aviation has completed the first flight of the Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3, marking an important milestone in the certification programme for its latest-generation light business jet while highlighting a range of cabin and cockpit enhancements designed around customer feedback.
The prototype aircraft completed a nearly two-hour flight from Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, validating key aircraft systems and cockpit software. The achievement means all three next-generation Citation light jets, the CJ4 Gen3, CJ3 Gen3 and M2 Gen3, are now undergoing flight testing.
The Citation CJ3 Gen3 introduces Garmin Emergency Autoland integrated with the Garmin G3000 avionics suite, providing an additional layer of safety and reducing pilot workload through advanced automation.
“The Citation CJ3 Gen3 builds on everything customers value about the CJ3 family while incorporating technology they’ve asked for to make flying even more intuitive and confidence-inspiring,” said Lannie O’Bannion, Senior Vice President, Global Sales & Marketing, Textron Aviation. “From advanced Garmin avionics to a refined cabin experience, this aircraft reflects our commitment to delivering practical innovations for customers.”
The aircraft’s cabin has been redesigned to enhance passenger comfort and flexibility, offering configurable seating, swivel seats, RGB ambient lighting and modern connectivity options. The naturally illuminated lavatory can also be equipped with premium interior finishes, further enhancing the passenger experience.
Chris Hearne, Senior Vice President, Engineering & Programs, Textron Aviation, said the successful first flight marks the beginning of comprehensive certification testing as the company works towards FAA approval and entry into service.
Designed for business aviation missions, the Citation CJ3 Gen3 combines an upgraded passenger cabin with improved cockpit technology while maintaining a maximum range of 2,040 nautical miles, seating for up to 10 occupants and a baggage capacity of 1,000 pounds.
