One of the major pain-points of air travel is cramped space in overhead cabins, much to the ire of the passengers who shift and shuffle the overhead bags to make room for their luggage. Realising this United Airlines has decided to nip the problem in the bud and become the first airline to introduce new, large overhead bins on its Skywest-operated Embraer E175 fleet.
This move will eliminate the need for one million annual passengers to gate-check bags on over 150,000 E175 flights, as per airlines’ estimate. These new extra large overhead bins will allow the airline an extra space to carry 29 carry-on bags on the regional jets, representing an 80 % increase in space.
Initially the airline has planned to installed the new large bins on its 50 aircraft E175 fleet with 76-seat configuration towards the end of 2024. Going ahead, the airline has planned to expand the overhead bins facility to over 150 aircraft by 2026. United Airlines boasts that this facility shows its commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and improving operational efficiency.
Stressing customers needs and United Airlines’ aim to improve passenger convenience, Linda Jojo, chief customer officer, Uniter Airlines affirms that customer sentiment for the new overhead bins and signature interiors has been positive. “By helping to eliminate the need to gate check bags, we are seeing an increase in gate and boarding satisfaction,” Jojo adds.
The airline claims that this is one of the latest ways to create an industry leading experience for United Airlines customers, both domestic as well as international.
By introducing larger overhead bins on its Embraer E175 fleet, United Airlines aims to elevate the passenger experience, reduce the need for gate-checked bags, and enhance operational efficiency, further solidifying its position as a leader in the aviation industry.
Additionally, each E175 fitted with the new bins will feature braille and tactile placards to enhance accessibility, aligning with United’s broader initiative announced in 2023.
So far, the airline has already equipped 200 mainline aircraft with bins large enough to accommodate every passenger’s carry-on bag. The airline is currently in the process of retrofitting its domestic narrowbody fleet.
SkyWest is world’s largest E175 operator with over 700 daily departures to 140 destinations and counting as United Express.
