Qatar Airways is on the brink of delivering a game-changing inflight experience as it nears the completion of Starlink Wi-Fi installations across its Boeing 777 fleet, while also kicking off the rollout on its Airbus A350s marking a significant milestone in aviation connectivity and passenger experience.
The partnership between Qatar Airways and SpaceX’s Starlink was announced at the 2023 Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, making the Gulf carrier the first airline in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to adopt Starlink’s next-gen satellite internet.
“Our agreement with Starlink will allow us to offer an unparalleled Wi-Fi experience on board, reflecting our commitment to innovation and excellence,” said Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker at the time of the initial announcement.
Lightning-Fast Connectivity
Passengers flying on Qatar Airways’ retrofitted aircraft can expect low-latency, high-speed Wi-Fi capable of supporting everything from video streaming and online gaming to VPN access and real-time messaging—a leap ahead from traditional in-flight internet services.
While Qatar Airways hasn’t specified the exact bandwidth per passenger, Starlink claims its in-flight solution offers speeds up to 350 Mbps per aircraft, making it possible for multiple users to stream HD content simultaneously.
“High-speed, low-latency internet is the future of aviation connectivity. Starlink’s system offers that now, and we are proud to support Qatar Airways in redefining what’s possible in the air,” said Jonathan Hofeller, VP of Starlink Commercial Sales at SpaceX.
Rollout Progress: 777s Almost Done, A350s Next
According to the latest updates, installations across the Boeing 777 fleet are nearly complete, and the Airbus A350s have begun receiving the upgrades. The airline plans to expand Starlink across additional long-haul aircraft, although no specific timeline has been disclosed.
The first aircraft equipped with Starlink is already operational, and Qatar Airways has committed to providing the service free of charge to passengers, further boosting its premium positioning in the global aviation market.
Raising the Bar for Global Airlines
Qatar Airways joins a small but growing club of airlines embracing LEO (Low-Earth Orbit) satellite connectivity, which offers significant advantages over traditional GEO (Geostationary Orbit) systems, including lower latency and better global coverage—particularly over remote areas and oceans.
The airline’s move not only strengthens its digital offering but also aligns with the increasing expectations of passengers who demand always-on connectivity—especially on long-haul routes.
What This Means for the Industry
With competition intensifying in the long-haul premium space, Qatar Airways’ Starlink-powered Wi-Fi rollout sets a new benchmark. The move is expected to influence rival carriers to rethink their connectivity solutions, especially as more LEO constellations from Starlink, OneWeb, and others begin scaling operations globally.
Moreover, this digital leap underscores Qatar Airways’ strategy of embedding innovation across its fleet—from cabin interiors to connectivity—to maintain its Skytrax World’s Best Airline standing.
