In a powerful step toward making air travel more inclusive and dignified for passengers with reduced mobility, Collins Aerospace has announced significant enhancements to its Prime wheelchair seating solution, underscoring the industry’s growing focus on accessibility without compromise.

The upgraded Prime system is designed to allow passengers using powered wheelchairs to remain in their personal mobility devices throughout the flight while seated safely and comfortably in the aircraft cabin.

“These enhancements to the Prime solution are about providing passengers with reduced mobility a safer, more comfortable, and dignified travel experience,” said Cynthia Muklevicz, vice president of Business Development for Collins Aerospace.

What’s New: Safety Meets Simplicity

The latest iteration of the Prime system features retractable seat pans and vertically folding seatbacks, allowing the standard seat to be transformed into a secure wheelchair docking station without sacrificing space or design elegance. These upgrades help eliminate the discomfort and potential injury that can result from transferring passengers to and from standard cabin seating.

Designed to be installed on standard aircraft seat tracking systems, the Prime solution can be retrofitted into new or existing aircraft cabins making it a flexible and cost-effective solution for both OEMs and commercial operators seeking to meet evolving accessibility standards.

 Seamless Integration into Cabin Configurations

One of the highlights of the updated solution is that it blends seamlessly into the cabin design. When not in use, the seating area functions like any standard premium seat, ensuring no loss of commercial seating capacity and preserving cabin aesthetics.

“By allowing wheelchair users to remain in their own devices, we remove one of the biggest pain points of air travel and give passengers back a sense of autonomy and comfort,” added Muklevicz.

The announcement arrives at a time when the call for more accessible air travel has grown louder, fuelled by advocacy groups and regulatory discussions around inclusivity in aviation. In the U.S., the Department of Transportation has been exploring new mandates to allow passengers to fly in their personal wheelchairs, a movement that Collins Aerospace appears well-positioned to support.

Collins’ Prime solution is aligned with the broader push for equity and inclusion in commercial aviation, with technology now playing a pivotal role in reshaping cabin experiences for underserved communities.

As airlines begin investing more in passenger experience and accessibility, innovations like the Prime seating system could become standard in next-generation cabin retrofits and new aircraft configurations.

With this latest announcement, Collins Aerospace is not only driving engineering excellence but also helping redefine what it means to fly with dignity making it clear that true innovation includes everyone on board.
