South Africa’s low-cost carrier FlySafair has selected Acro Aircraft Seating to equip its Boeing 737 fleet with multiple shipsets of Series 9 Fixed‑Back economy seats. This marks the first collaboration between the two companies, with seat deliveries scheduled from late 2025

The Series 9, initially launched in 2022, is designed specifically for short- to medium-haul operations. It combines lightweight construction with enhanced comfort and ergonomic support features crucial to high-utilisation fleets. According to Acro, the seat offers “exceptional living space at a low‑density seat pitch” while delivering “the lowest effective lifetime cost of purchase and ownership”

Operator Perspective

FlySafair’s Chief Marketing Officer, Kirby Gordon, commented on the selection process: “At FlySafair, we undertook a comprehensive evaluation of various seating options before selecting Acro’s Series 9. These seats stood out for their comfort, quality, and thoughtful design, while also offering the benefit of being lightweight. Beyond the product itself, the Acro team has been a pleasure to work with throughout the process, and we look forward to building on this partnership in the years ahead.”

His endorsement highlights the balanced priorities of user experience and operational efficiency that Acro’s seats bring to the fleet.

From Acro’s side, Commercial Director Damian Protano expressed optimism about the new relationship: “It is fantastic to be working with FlySafair for the first time… We are particularly delighted that FlySafair has chosen our Series 9 Fixed‑Back seat for its fleet of 737s, as the seats deliver on every aspect of what FlySafair needs a high level of comfort, lightweight design and low maintenance seats. I hope this is just the start of a great partnership between Acro and FlySafair and we hope to be a part of its continued success.”

FlySafair currently operates a fleet of 33 Boeing 737s, and the introduction of Series 9 seats will mark the first time the airline works with Acro. The rollout is planned to begin at the end of 2025, with shipsets tailored to each aircraft’s configuration.

  • Slimline economy class: Series 9’s fixed-back, slimline profile supports lightweight cabin fits without sacrificing passenger space.
  • Efficiency-driven retrofits: As regional airlines update ageing 737 fleets, seat weight and maintenance play a pivotal role in OPEX control.
  • Collaborative OEM-Airline alignment: Positive feedback from both sides underscores the importance of working relationships in interior adoption.
