Astronics Corporation has introduced a new in-seat power solution, the EmPower 1327-27 dual USB Type-C outlet, designed to support higher power demands from passenger electronic devices in commercial aircraft cabins.

The unit delivers up to 60W of combined output across two USB-C ports, allowing passengers to charge laptops, tablets and smartphones during flight. When only one port is in use, the system can allocate the full power output to a single device, while automatically distributing power when both ports are occupied.

The outlet is designed for installation across multiple cabin applications, including passenger seating, galleys, flight decks and crew rest areas. It maintains the same form factor as earlier EmPower units, enabling compatibility with existing seat cut-outs and reducing retrofit complexity.

Additional design features include an LED backlight for visibility in low-light conditions and configurable faceplates to align with cabin interior requirements. The unit is built to meet commercial aviation durability standards and is compliant with FAA and EASA certification requirements, as well as OEM line-fit specifications.

Jon Neal, President of Astronics Advanced Electronic Systems, stated, “As passenger demand for high-power, device-ready solutions continues to rise, airlines are looking for versatile power solutions that enhance the onboard experience while seamlessly blending into the cabin environment. The Dual USB Type-C outlet delivers on both fronts, reflecting Astronics’ commitment to innovation, reliability, and fulfilling the needs of both passengers and airlines.”

The introduction reflects increasing demand for higher-power in-seat charging as passenger reliance on personal electronic devices continues to grow, particularly for laptop use on long-haul and business travel routes.
