Bucher Leichtbau AG has completed an overhaul programme for aircraft galleys operated by the Lufthansa Group, covering units originally delivered in 2011 for Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.

The refurbishment programme involved the return of the galleys to Bucher facilities for inspection, structural testing and modernization work aimed at extending their operational life.

According to the company, the project focused on retaining existing structural components while incorporating upgrades required to meet current operational and safety standards, rather than replacing the galley units.

Bucher said the overhaul programme followed its “Reduce, Reuse, Renew” approach, centred on minimizing material use, retaining serviceable structural parts and modernizing components where necessary.

The galleys are based on Bucher’s lightweight aluminium construction, designed to reduce weight while maintaining structural durability and corrosion resistance. The company stated that the modular design allows individual components to be repaired, replaced or upgraded during refurbishment cycles.

Bucher also said extending the service life of cabin interiors can support more efficient fleet resource management and contribute to lower material consumption over the product lifecycle.

Beat Burlet, CEO of the Bucher Group, said the project demonstrated the long-term durability of cabin interior systems designed for refurbishment.

“With this overhaul project, we are demonstrating that aircraft cabin interiors, when developed with a focus on quality and sustainability, can achieve an exceptionally long service life,” said Beat Burlet, CEO of the Bucher Group.

He added that refurbishing and modernizing existing galley equipment instead of replacing it could help airlines reduce costs and resource consumption.

The programme forms part of wider industry efforts to extend the operational life of cabin equipment through refurbishment and modernization initiatives.
