IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has announced a significant enhancement to its in-flight services. Starting July 1, 2025, the airline will introduce complimentary hot meals on its long-haul international flights, marking a departure from its traditional no-frills service model.
The shift in service model
Historically, IndiGo has been known for its cost-effective approach, which included not serving hot meals to reduce operational complexities and maintain low fares. This strategy allowed the airline to minimize turnaround times and avoid the need for onboard ovens, contributing to fuel savings and overall efficiency.
However, with the expansion into long-haul international routes, IndiGo recognizes the need to align with passenger expectations for international travel, which often include complimentary meals. This move is seen as a strategic step to enhance the passenger experience and compete with full-service carriers on long-haul routes.
Meal options and service details
On the Mumbai–Manchester and Mumbai–Amsterdam routes, the airline will operate Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, featuring 282 economy and 56 business class seats. All passengers will receive complimentary hot meals and non-alcoholic beverages. IndiGoStretch passengers in business class will enjoy additional amenities, including premium alcoholic beverages from renowned Indian brands, priority check-in, flexible boarding, and increased baggage allowance.
Competitive positioning
This enhancement in service is part of IndiGo’s broader strategy to establish a competitive edge in the international market. By offering complimentary hot meals, the airline aims to attract passengers who might otherwise opt for full-service carriers. This move positions IndiGo as a strong contender in the long-haul segment, catering to the growing demand for affordable yet quality air travel options.
IndiGo’s decision to introduce hot meals on long-haul flights reflects a strategic adaptation to the evolving expectations of international travelers. By enhancing its in-flight services, IndiGo aims to provide a more comprehensive travel experience, balancing affordability with quality, and strengthening its position in the competitive international aviation market.
