Muirhead has introduced BioPRO Foam, the world’s first naturally fire-resistant, protein-based aviation biofoam. This innovative material is crafted using hydrolyzed collagen—a by-product of Muirhead’s leather manufacturing process—integrating sustainability into aircraft seating solutions.

Dr. Warren Bowden, Head of Innovation & Sustainability at Muirhead and Scottish Leather Group, highlighted the significance of this development: “By incorporating our own bio-protein into the foam’s chemistry, we’ve eliminated the need for harmful additives while improving durability. This sets a new benchmark for next-generation seat foam technology and reflects our commitment to vertically integrated, circular manufacturing.”

BioPRO Foam comprises 20% bio-content and is free from substances like melamine and PFAS, which are commonly found in traditional seat foams. The process involves chemically bonding collagen to the foam’s structure, enhancing durability and eliminating internal abrasion, thereby extending the product’s lifespan.

Unlike conventional foams cut from large blocks, BioPRO is molded to precise customer specifications, reducing waste and ensuring consistent shape and size for cushions. This approach not only streamlines production but also aligns with sustainable manufacturing practices. This development underscores Muirhead’s dedication to environmental stewardship and innovation in the aviation industry. By transforming manufacturing by-products into valuable resources, Muirhead sets a precedent for sustainable practices, contributing to an eco-friendly future in aircraft interiors.
