United Airlines is accelerating its timeline to roll out Starlink satellite internet across its fleet, with test flights set to begin next month on its Embraer E-175 aircraft. The first commercial flights are expected to launch in spring 2025, marking a major milestone in the airline’s push for a faster, more reliable inflight experience. By the end of the year, United plans to have Starlink on its entire regional fleet, with a full fleet-wide rollout to follow.

Shifting the Game in Inflight Connectivity

With Starlink, United is set to offer gate-to-gate high-speed internet that will allow passengers to enjoy seamless streaming, gaming, shopping, and more—all from their personal devices or seatback screens.

“We have a lot planned for our MileagePlus members this year and adding Starlink to as many planes as we can – as quickly as we can – is at the center of it all,” said Richard Nunn, chief executive of United MileagePlus. “It’s not only going to revolutionize the experience of flying United, but it’s also going to unlock tons of new partnerships and benefits for our members that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.”

This move follows United’s September 2023 agreement with SpaceX to equip its entire fleet with Starlink, bringing satellite-based internet to the skies. Unlike traditional air-to-ground systems, Starlink’s low-latency, high-speed network promises a more consistent and faster connection, even at cruising altitude.

Transforming Passenger Experience and Aircraft Connectivity

This next-level connectivity will be a game-changer for both passengers and aircraft manufacturers. United is betting on Starlink’s high-bandwidth capabilities to offer live-streaming content, remote work tools, and interactive gaming—all available simultaneously on seatback screens and personal devices. The ability to maintain high-speed internet throughout the entire flight will allow United to meet the rising demand for reliable inflight internet across both domestic and international routes.

For aircraft manufacturers, this will require significant upgrades to existing aircraft, including the integration of new satellite communication equipment and antennas. United is positioning itself to lead the industry by offering the most reliable and fast inflight internet available, capitalizing on SpaceX’s cutting-edge satellite technology.
