In a landmark collaboration aimed at redefining long-range narrowbody travel, Aer Lingus has become the second airline globally to introduce the all-new R3 Economy Class seat from RECARO Aircraft Seating, debuting on the Irish carrier’s next-generation Airbus A321XLR fleet.
RECARO’s R3 seat is positioned as a game-changing solution in the long-range single-aisle segment. Designed for enhanced comfort, sustainability, and performance, the R3 is already garnering attention across the aviation sector for its ultra-lightweight design, nearly 2 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. This weight reduction translates into meaningful fuel savings, helping airlines meet ambitious decarbonization targets while maintaining a premium onboard experience.

Comfort Meets Innovation
Engineered specifically for medium- and long-haul operations, the R3 incorporates multiple passenger-centric upgrades. These include:
- A 6-way adjustable headrest with integrated neck support
- USB charging ports and integrated in-seat monitors
- Comfort armrests and plush cushions
- RECARO’s patented steward step on aisle seats for easier overhead bin access
Aer Lingus has further personalized the seat with customized shamrock-themed dress covers, aligning aesthetics with brand identity and national pride.

New standard in long-range narrowbody travel. The A321XLR is transforming long-haul narrowbody routes, and seating innovation plays a critical role in unlocking its full potential. Just as Aer Lingus plans to operate 24 transatlantic routes by 2025, now equipped with the R3 to offer a cabin experience more closely aligned with that of widebody aircraft.
The R3 seat made its initial debut with Starlux Airlines, the first operator to adopt the seat for its Airbus A321neo fleet. With Aer Lingus now joining the R3 roster, the seat is gaining traction among airlines looking to bridge the gap between low-cost efficiency and premium passenger expectations.
Future-ready design RECARO’s focus on sustainable manufacturing, ergonomics, and modularity allows the R3 to be tailored for both cost-sensitive carriers and full-service airlines. It aligns with the International Airlines Group’s (IAG) sustainability goals, of which Aer Lingus is a key member, including net zero emissions by 2050 and powering 10% of flights with SAF by 2030.
