Collins Aerospace Bets on Smarter Cabin Space and Seating

At the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2026, Collins Aerospace, introduced a series of seating and cabin innovations that collectively signal a shift in how aircraft interiors are being designed, across both narrowbody and widebody platforms.

From premium suites on single-aisle aircraft to next-generation economy seating and award-winning cabin concepts, the company’s latest developments reflect a growing focus on space optimisation, modularity and passenger-centric design.

Bringing widebody comfort to narrowbody aircraft

A key highlight is Collins’ full-cabin seating integration for Air Canada’s Airbus A321XLR fleet. The aircraft will feature 14 Aurora business class suites and 168 Meridian+ economy seats, marking a continued evolution of long-haul narrowbody cabins.

The Aurora suite is designed to deliver lie-flat capability within the constraints of a single-aisle fuselage. Its configuration leverages the A321XLR’s dimensions to optimise layout efficiency, enabling additional premium seating and increased galley capacity.

Cynthia Muklevicz, Vice President of Global Airlines and Lessors at Collins Aerospace, said:
“Aurora is designed to provide a widebody business class experience on single-aisle aircraft, offering passengers the comfort, space and privacy expected on long-haul flights.”

The suite has been developed in collaboration with Air Canada and design partner Acumen, incorporating customised materials and a layout tailored to support extended-range operations.

John Moody, managing Director of On-Board Product at Air Canada, added:
“Our primary goal was to elevate the in-flight experience by creating a space that feels exceptionally inviting and highly personal. With the Aurora suite, we are setting the standard through the thoughtful use of space, technology, bespoke materials and finishes.”

Evolving economy seating for next-generation fleets

Alongside its premium offering, Collins is advancing its economy class portfolio with both the Meridian+ and the newly introduced Helix platform.

Meridian+, selected by Air Canada, incorporates design elements derived from widebody seating, including contoured structures aimed at improving passenger living space in high-density cabins.

Meanwhile, the Helix main cabin seat, announced with three undisclosed international launch customers, will be installed across approximately 200 Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 family aircraft.

The seat focuses on balancing passenger comfort with operational efficiency, featuring reduced weight, simplified architecture and improved ergonomics while maintaining existing seat densities.

Steve Kotso, Vice President and General Manager of Commercial Seating at Collins Aerospace, said:
“Our airline customers are looking for cabin solutions to support the next decade of narrowbody travel, particularly as fleets and network strategies continue to evolve.”

Reclaiming underutilised cabin space

Beyond seating, Collins’ approach to cabin innovation is also addressing overlooked areas within the aircraft interior.

The company’s SkyNook concept, winner of the 2026 Crystal Cabin Award in the Passenger Comfort category, reimagines space in the aft section of widebody aircraft, where fuselage tapering often limits standard seating configurations.

The solution introduces a convertible console between the seat and aircraft wall, allowing the space to be used for multiple purposes, including securing child seats, bassinets or pet carriers, or as an extended work and dining surface. Additional features include a privacy divider and sound-dampening elements to reduce disturbance from nearby galley and lavatory areas.

Jefferey McKee, Director of Customer Experience Design at Collins Aerospace, said:
“SkyNook exemplifies this commitment, transforming a frequently overlooked area into a serene retreat that maximizes functionality, comfort and flexibility for families, passengers with service animals or those with sensory considerations.”

A broader shift in cabin design

Taken together, these developments highlight a broader industry shift toward maximising usable cabin space while enhancing passenger comfort across all classes.

From lie-flat suites in narrowbody aircraft to adaptable economy seating and multi-functional cabin zones, Collins Aerospace’s latest portfolio reflects the increasing importance of flexibility, efficiency and differentiated passenger experience in aircraft interior design.

With entry into service for Air Canada’s A321XLR fleet expected in 2026 and Helix deliveries planned from 2027, these solutions are set to play a role in shaping the next phase of commercial aviation interiors.
