The initiative, available through July 20, enables customers on up to 150 Starlink-equipped aircraft to watch more than a dozen live television channels directly from their seatback screens. Available channels include FOX, Fox Sports 1, Apple F1, ABC, ESPN, TNT, CBS, NBC, TBS, and BBC News.

The rollout coincides with one of the busiest periods in the global sports calendar, allowing passengers to follow live sporting events while in flight through United’s high-speed Starlink connectivity platform.

Expanding the connected cabin experience

The deployment highlights the growing role of broadband connectivity in transforming inflight entertainment from traditional on-demand systems to real-time streaming experiences.

United currently has Starlink service active on more than 400 mainline and regional aircraft and plans to equip its entire fleet by the end of 2027. The airline said the integration of live television represents the next phase of its connected cabin strategy, leveraging Starlink’s low-latency network to support bandwidth-intensive applications.

Andrew Nocella, Chief Commercial Officer at United Airlines, said the partnership demonstrates how reliable connectivity can enhance the passenger experience by bringing live content to seatback displays in real time.

New possibilities for inflight entertainment

The live TV service is delivered through web-enabled applications including Viasat Live TV and Thales 360, which distribute streaming content to seatback screens using Starlink connectivity.

Industry observers view the development as a significant step in the evolution of inflight entertainment, as airlines increasingly seek to replicate ground-based digital experiences in the cabin. The ability to access live sports, breaking news, and real-time programming is expected to become an increasingly important differentiator for carriers investing in next-generation connectivity solutions.

As airlines continue upgrading cabin technology, the combination of high-speed satellite connectivity and streaming-enabled seatback systems is opening new opportunities for passenger engagement and personalised entertainment experiences.
