Air India Express has unveiled the first Boeing 737 aircraft to feature its fully redesigned cabin interior, setting a new benchmark in India’s low-cost aviation segment and signalling the airline’s commitment to redefining comfort and style in short-to-medium-haul travel.
The move marks a key milestone in the Air India Group’s transformation roadmap, following its privatisation and subsequent integration efforts aimed at revitalising the Group’s multiple airline brands.
The newly retrofitted 737 sports a modern, minimalist interior design that blends visual warmth with practical functionality. The aircraft features 180 ergonomically designed leather seats supplied by Collins Aerospace, chosen for their superior lumbar support and lightweight construction, improving both passenger comfort and aircraft efficiency.

Each seat is equipped with a USB-C charging port, ensuring that passengers can keep their devices powered throughout the flight, a growing expectation in today’s digitally connected travel environment.
Overhead, Boeing’s Sky Interior lighting system bathes the cabin in soft, customizable LED illumination, enhancing the sense of space while reducing fatigue during longer journeys. The design also incorporates larger pivoting overhead bins, allowing for more carry-on storage, a subtle but significant improvement for travellers used to congested cabin spaces.
Beyond seating, Air India Express has reimagined its in-flight dining experience to align with the refreshed interiors. The airline has introduced ovens across its fleet to serve freshly heated meals, moving away from the standard pre-packed cold trays often associated with low-cost operations.
The updated ‘Gourmair’ menu now includes 18 meal options, ranging from traditional Indian hot meals to international favourites, alongside a broader breakfast offering. This culinary revamp aims to elevate the onboard experience without straying from the airline’s low-cost DNA.
The interior transformation programme for the airline’s Boeing 737 narrowbody fleet is being executed across India’s top MRO providers, GMR, AIESL, and Air Works. The collaboration brings together India’s strongest technical capabilities in cabin retrofitting, avionics integration, and quality assurance.
According to industry analysts, Air India Express’s approach to integrating in-house design objectives with local MRO execution underscores the growing maturity of India’s aircraft interiors and cabin refurbishment ecosystem. It also complements the government’s ‘Make in India’ vision by leveraging domestic expertise in retrofit and modification programmes.
As Air India Express continues to integrate with AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India), the airline’s refreshed interiors are a visible expression of its new brand philosophy blending efficiency, warmth, and a touch of premium sensibility within a low-cost framework.
The redesigned aircraft interior not only aligns visually with the Group’s broader rebranding under the new Air India livery but also serves as a testing ground for cabin innovations that may influence future fleet upgrades across the Group’s carriers.
With the introduction of its first reconfigured Boeing 737, Air India Express joins a growing global trend of low-cost carriers investing in cabin comfort and aesthetic differentiation. The airline aims to redefine value travel by combining efficient fleet operations with a passenger-centric approach, one that recognises that today’s travellers expect affordability without compromise.
As more aircraft in the fleet undergo retrofitting, passengers across India and on international routes to the Middle East and Southeast Asia can look forward to a fresh, comfortable, and contemporary flying experience, one that reflects the airline’s renewed focus on innovation, reliability, and customer delight.
