The Green Cabin Alliance (GCA) has launched Airline Allies, a new collaborative initiative designed to help airlines accelerate the adoption of more sustainable and circular aircraft cabin practices. The programme expands GCA’s industry network by bringing airlines together with manufacturers, OEMs, suppliers, designers, material innovators and other aviation stakeholders to jointly address sustainability challenges across the aircraft cabin lifecycle.

The initiative comes at a time when the aviation industry has made significant progress in reducing operational emissions through fleet modernisation, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and improved operational efficiency. However, cabin sustainability—including material selection, refurbishment, waste management and end-of-life recycling—remains an area with considerable untapped potential.

Circular cabin ecosystem

Unlike traditional linear cabin programmes, the Airline Allies initiative aims to promote a circular approach, encouraging greater reuse, refurbishment and recycling of cabin materials while reducing waste throughout the aircraft lifecycle.

With both Airbus and Boeing already serving on the Green Cabin Alliance’s advisory board, the inclusion of airlines is expected to strengthen collaboration across the aviation value chain and ensure sustainability initiatives better reflect operational realities.

The programme recognises that many cabin sustainability challenges cannot be solved by individual organisations alone. Decisions related to cabin interiors, materials, maintenance and disposal often involve multiple stakeholders, making industry-wide collaboration essential for delivering meaningful environmental improvements.

New opportunities

For airlines, participation in Airline Allies will provide access to sustainability benchmarking, emerging cabin technologies, innovative materials and closer collaboration with OEMs, suppliers and recycling specialists.

From an MRO perspective, the initiative highlights the growing role maintenance organisations will play in supporting sustainable cabin programmes. As airlines increasingly prioritise refurbishment, component reuse and lifecycle extension over complete cabin replacement, MRO providers are expected to become key partners in delivering circular maintenance solutions.

The initiative also aims to support airlines in translating long-term environmental commitments into practical actions that improve procurement strategies, reduce waste and strengthen ESG performance.

A key feature of the programme will be its structured Working Group Sprints, designed to move beyond industry discussions by bringing together airlines and supply chain partners to identify common challenges and develop practical, scalable solutions for wider industry adoption.

According to Elina Kopola, Founder of the Green Cabin Alliance, the aircraft cabin represents one of aviation’s greatest remaining opportunities to improve sustainability.

“The aviation industry has made enormous progress in tackling operational emissions, but the aircraft cabin represents one of the biggest remaining opportunities to improve sustainability. Every journey begins and ends in the cabin, yet many of the challenges surrounding materials, waste and circularity cannot be solved by airlines working alone,” she said.

Kopola added that Airline Allies would enable airlines to work directly with organisations designing, manufacturing and maintaining future aircraft cabins, helping accelerate innovation while reducing duplication across the industry.

Cabin sustainability

Membership in Airline Allies is voluntary and open to airlines of all sizes, regardless of where they are on their sustainability journey. Rather than requiring established sustainability programmes, the initiative encourages participants to contribute operational experience, share challenges and collaborate on solutions that can benefit the wider aviation sector.
