Gogo completes flight testing of its 5G air-to-ground network, enabling streaming-class inflight entertainment and improved passenger connectivity across North America.

Gogo has completed flight testing and validation of its next-generation 5G air-to-ground (ATG) broadband network, clearing the final technical hurdle ahead of commercial service entry across the continental US and southern Canada in January 2026.

The test campaign logged more than 30 flight hours across nearly 20 routes, validating coverage continuity, latency performance, and network resilience. According to Gogo, the 5G ATG system consistently delivered download speeds exceeding 80 Mbps and uploads above 20 Mbps, enabling simultaneous streaming and internet use during flight, an order-of-magnitude improvement over legacy ATG architectures.

The company has already onboarded its first paying customer, with approximately 450 aircraft pre-provisioned to activate the service as the rollout begins in early 2026. The network is positioned as a domestic broadband alternative for business aviation and regional operators seeking higher throughput without the cost and installation complexity associated with Ka- or Ku-band satellite systems.

Chris Moore, Gogo’s chief executive, described the testing milestone as a pivotal moment following earlier program delays, noting that the focus has now shifted firmly to operational delivery and fleet activation.

From an aftermarket and MRO perspective, certification readiness is a key enabler of adoption. Gogo has contracted 33 supplemental type certificates (STCs) covering the majority of aircraft types operating in the CONUS market. Of these, 28 STCs have been completed, with the remaining five expected to be finalized before year-end. Collectively, the approvals open access to an addressable fleet of more than 7,500 aircraft.

The STC strategy limits downtime and installation complexity, requiring only minor upgrades on pre-equipped aircraft. This approach is expected to ease capacity pressure on business aviation MROs while accelerating retrofit cycles, particularly among operators upgrading cabins to support streaming-class connectivity and higher passenger device density.

The launch comes as cabin connectivity expectations continue to rise, even on short-haul and domestic missions. While the system does not directly alter cabin interiors, higher and more stable bandwidth has downstream implications for IFEC strategies, connected cabin applications, and future digital services such as real-time data offload and predictive maintenance.

For lessors and fleet planners, the availability of a high-performance ATG option may influence connectivity line-fit decisions and residual value assumptions for North America-focused aircraft, particularly in the light jet, turboprop, and super-midsize categories.

With certification largely in place and early customers already live, Gogo’s 5G ATG entry marks a significant inflection point in the North American connectivity landscape. The pace of activation through 2026 will depend on MRO slot availability, operator upgrade priorities, and competitive responses from satellite connectivity providers—but the technical validation phase is now firmly complete.
