In a landmark moment for West Africa’s aviation sector, Air Côte d’Ivoire has welcomed its first Airbus A330-900 into the fleet, early September 2025. This aircraft is the flag carrier’s very first widebody and is a pivotal step in its long-haul expansion strategy. Configured in a four-class layout with four First Class, 44 Business, 21 Premium Economy, and 173 Economy seats, the A330neo signals the airline’s ambition to deliver a truly premium travel experience while positioning itself as a competitive player on intercontinental routes.

With this delivery, Air Côte d’Ivoire is no longer just a regional operator. It is preparing for long-haul connections to Europe, starting with Paris, and further expansion to the Middle East and North America.

The A330neo is fitted with Airbus’ award-winning Airspace cabin, bringing a new level of comfort, design, and passenger well-being. The interiors are crafted to enhance the travel experience across every class of service. Passengers can expect more personal space, larger overhead bins, advanced mood lighting systems, and the latest in-flight entertainment (IFE) and connectivity options.

The lighting system, in particular, is designed to reduce jet lag, while the wider seats and ergonomically engineered designs ensure comfort on long-haul journeys. Passengers will also benefit from new-generation IFE with larger seatback screens and full connectivity, allowing them to stay entertained and connected throughout the flight.

“The arrival of the A330neo marks a new chapter for Air Côte d’Ivoire and for air travel in West Africa,” said Laurent Loukou, CEO of Air Côte d’Ivoire. “With the four-class Airspace cabin, we are not just transporting passengers, we are delivering an experience. Our aim is to provide comfort, style, and choice to every traveller, whether they are flying for business or leisure.”

Thompson Aero Seating’s VantageXL

A highlight of the cabin is Air Côte d’Ivoire’s decision to introduce Thompson Aero Seating’s latest VantageXL business-class product. The airline has chosen a customised configuration, including fully enclosed front-row suites marketed as “First Class by Air Côte d’Ivoire”. This innovative approach offers a premium First Class-style experience within the confines of a business-class cabin, making the most of cabin real estate while elevating passenger privacy and exclusivity.

The VantageXL seat offers direct aisle access, a fully flat bed, enhanced personal space, and multiple stowage options. The bespoke design features a modern finish, blending light greys, charcoals, dark wood accents, and touches of the airline’s signature burnt orange for a distinctive West African identity.

Rachel McMurray, Programme Manager at Thompson Aero Seating, called the project “game-changing.” Meanwhile, Andy Morris, Chief Commercial Officer at Thompson Aero Seating, noted: “Air Côte d’Ivoire’s selection underlines our momentum in the A330 premium seating market and demonstrates how the VantageXL can be tailored to meet the needs of ambitious, fast-growing airlines.”

Elevating Every Class

The four-class layout is one of the most notable features of the new aircraft, making Air Côte d’Ivoire one of the few African carriers to offer such a premium mix.

  • First Class: A bespoke “First Class by Air Côte d’Ivoire” suite derived from the VantageXL product, offering unmatched privacy in the front row.
  • Business Class: 44 Thompson VantageXL seats with direct aisle access and full-flat capability, combining comfort and efficiency.
  • Premium Economy: 21 wider recliners with enhanced legroom, premium dining, and a quieter cabin environment.
  • Economy Class: 173 ergonomically designed seats with modern finishes, personal entertainment screens, and ample stowage.

This balanced configuration ensures the airline can serve multiple passenger segments, from premium business travellers to leisure passengers.

Humanitarian Delivery Flight

The delivery flight itself carried a powerful message of community support. From Toulouse to Abidjan, the aircraft transported five tonnes of humanitarian supplies, including school materials and health equipment. Coordinated with the Airbus Foundation and supported by Aviation Sans Frontières, the donations were distributed to LifeShine and la Bienfaisance, two local NGOs in Abidjan.

“This delivery flight demonstrates our dual mission,” said Laurent Loukou. “We are here to connect Côte d’Ivoire to the world, but also to give back to our communities at home.”

For Airbus, the handover of the A330neo to Air Côte d’Ivoire represents more than a delivery, it is a reinforcement of the manufacturer’s role in shaping the African long-haul market.

Beyond interiors and passenger experience, the A330neo also strengthens the airline’s sustainability credentials. Already certified to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), the aircraft is aligned with Airbus’ wider commitment to making its entire fleet 100% SAF capable by 2030.

At the end of July 2025, the Airbus A330 family had received more than 1,920 firm orders from over 130 customers worldwide, proving its popularity as a flexible, fuel-efficient widebody.

The introduction of the A330neo is more than a fleet upgrade, it is a strategic leap for Air Côte d’Ivoire. With its four-class Airspace cabin, customised Thompson VantageXL suites, and a strong commitment to community and sustainability, the airline is setting a new standard for passenger experience in West and Central Africa.

As Air Côte d’Ivoire prepares to launch flights to Paris and later expand to the Middle East and North America, it is no longer just a regional connector. With its cabin interiors as a differentiator, the carrier is emerging as a flagship airline for the region, ready to compete on the global stage.

FAQ

Q1. What does Thompson Aero Seating’s VantageXL rollout on Air Côte d’Ivoire signify for the premium cabin market?

A: The deployment highlights how African carriers are increasingly investing in next-generation cabin products to compete on long-haul routes. For Thompson Aero, the win reinforces its positioning in the highly competitive A330 premium seating market, traditionally dominated by larger players. Strategically, it reflects a growing democratization of cutting-edge business class experiences where even mid-sized carriers are now seeking bespoke, globally competitive cabin solutions.

Q2. How does the “First Class by Air Côte d’Ivoire” concept within a business cabin reshape traditional cabin class distinctions?

A: By introducing fully enclosed front-row suites branded as first class, Air Côte d’Ivoire is blurring the line between business and first class in a cost-efficient way. This model allows airlines to deliver exclusivity and privacy without dedicating an entirely separate cabin to first class—a trend increasingly adopted by carriers looking to balance prestige with profitability. It represents a smart hybridization strategy that could inspire similar layouts across emerging and established markets.

Q3. What broader implications does this project have for the aircraft interiors and seating supply chain?

A: The bespoke design, with its combination of premium finishes and tailored branding, underscores the demand for customization in modern cabins. For suppliers, it means ramping up flexible production capabilities and offering modular designs that can be adapted to different airline identities. Strategically, this could accelerate a shift away from “off-the-shelf” solutions, pushing the interiors supply chain towards agile, co-creation partnerships with airlines particularly as competition in the widebody retrofit and line-fit markets intensifies.
